Verdict: 5 days. Following the horrifying explosion that took place at Beirut’s port on August 4th of last year, the president of the republic issued a statement promising that those responsible for the murder of hundreds of people and the destruction of half a city would be held accountable within that reasonable amount of time. Nearly 7 months later, not only is justice far from being served to citizens that are also facing all sorts of turmoil including the arrest of activists protesting for their most basic rights, but the government had the audacity of removing and replacing the investigative judge the second he dared to question the involvement of high-status politicians. It’s a disgusting abuse of power and a blatant display of the corruption that is tearing this country to shreds, and the reason why watching Costa-Garvas’ Oscar-winning film “Z” boiled my blood to no end.
The similarities between the events taking place in this French classic and the reality we’re currently experiencing are too evident to disregard. Following the murder of a prominent leftist figure, we get a behind the scene access at the investigation aiming at uncovering the truth behind it. An investigation that reeks of illegitimate interferences by external forces who consider themselves above the law. They’re provided immunity by an equally corrupt police force, granting them the ultimate status of untouchables which is painful to see as it speaks volumes on the imbalance of power held by these individuals compared to the average citizen who opposes their inhumane policies.
As you can tell, “Z” had such a big impact on me because I’m witnessing with my own eyes the events it’s denouncing. But even if you look at it from a more objective lens, you’re still rewarded with a magnificently crafted political thriller that I guarantee will leave you on the edge of your seat for its entire runtime. So if that sounds like something you’d enjoy, I highly suggest giving it a shot.
