Verdict: "Drive" is considered by many to be Nicolas Winding Refn magnum opus, and it's easy to see why. I mean, how can one not at the very least appreciate the care that was put into the Ryan Gosling-led crime thriller? How can one not gaze at the gorgeous cinematography and cold atmosphere that englobe the mysteriousness of the unnamed protagonist? "Drive" is a treat for the eyes, there's no question there, and proves itself to be very effective when it comes to setting up an appropriately gloomy mood.
Gosling's performance is as perfect as always and is supported by many talents that each do justice to their parts. From Carey Mulligan and Bryan Cranston to Albert Brooks and Ron Perlman, each member of the cast understood exactly what was going on in the mind of their respective characters. They all complemented Gosling's role stupendously, which is critical in a film in which the study of the main character serves as its focus.
The story surrounding them, however, is very Hollywoodian. And if I had to pinpoint one element about the movie that I didn't particularly find appealing, that would be it. I watched the film for the first time about 5 or 6 years ago and was shocked at how much of it I had forgotten. It's no surprise to me that this is Refn's most acclaimed work because it's easily his most accessible.
My review sounds much more pessimistic as I wanted it to be because I still love pretty much everything about "Drive". The story is its least interesting element but the cinematography, acting, ambiance, and thorough character study make up for it to the extent where it's nearly eclipsed by them. If you're not familiar with Refn's body of work and wish to dive into his filmography, I recommend starting your journey with "Drive".
