Verdict: For a movie with such an ugly poster, "Swallow" was quite the pleasant surprise! Starring Haley Bennett, the film follows Hunter, a pregnant housewife who, having long lost control over her life, picks up a nasty habit of swallowing random things whole just to feel something.
If you've seen Elizabeth Moss' "The Invisible Man", it feels like a prequel to it in some way, where we get to witness the toxic marriage between a young, rich CEO and his unhappy wife. But what struck me the most about "Swallow" was the way it was shot. From its color palette to shot composition, everything was very easy on the eye despite featuring more than one scene that I'd definitely describe as upsetting. Haley Bennett's performance was also a massive plus as she carried the film on her shoulders, allowing the audience to access her state of mind and understand the situation she's in.
My only wish in regards to the overall movie was for it to dive deeper into its concept. I felt like it was the safest version of what it wanted to be, which is a bit it unfortunate given the interesting topic it shines a light on.
Carlo Mirabella-Davis' directorial debut remains nevertheless a psychological thriller worth checking out. It's probably not a movie that'll be remembered as one of the genre's greats, but I definitely wasn't bored at any given moment.

FINAL GRADE: 6/10
