Verdict: I've always been a big fan of Eva Green, but it's been a while since she released a film I genuinely enjoyed. In fact, she hasn't been very active as of late, with only about 4 releases to her name in the past 5 or 6 years.
"Proxima", for me, marks the French actress' return to glory. It's by far her best work in years, and quite possibly one of my favorite films of 2019. Directed by Alice Winocour, it follows the relationship between an astronaut set to go on a year-long mission in space and her daughter, who's having a hard time adjusting to the big change that's about to hit her.
Despite showing us the ruthless training that our main character has to go through in order to be able to achieve the mission, "Proxima" is by no means a space movie. It's very much a film about the bond shared between mothers and their children and the emotional toll experienced by both parties when they have to be separated for one reason or another. The story is a very simple yet very touching one, elevated by wonderfully written characters and excellent chemistry between Eva Green and Zélie Boulant, both of whom give impressive performances that required them to speak more than one language. The two of them, who even physically look very similar, showed a wide range of emotions. I bought them as mother and daughter, and I bought every single interaction they had or emotion they showed, which is the very reason why the movie works so well.
Despite slight issues with some of the lines given to Matt Dillon's character, I don't really have much else to say about "Proxima". It was shortlisted as France's submission to this year's Academy Awards but lost to "Les Misérables", which sadly resulted in it not nearly getting the buzz it deserves. I definitely recommend checking it out if you're a fan of very movies that feel very human because it honestly doesn't get more human than that.

FINAL GRADE: 8/10
