Verdict: A dark retelling of the Grimm fairy tale isn't the worse idea on paper considering the twisted nature of the story itself. I mean think about it, it's about a cannibalistic witch that lures kids into her house to enslave and eat them. The fact that many children, me included, grew up with that fable is something to think about.
"Gretel & Hansel" does follow the dark and gritty route, but unfortunately fails hard on delivering on its premise. I'm not even sure to which audience it's catering for, because while containing many clichés found in recent commercial horror films, it still took itself way more seriously than it should've. The tone did not match the content at all, and that resulted in the film being uninteresting and frankly just dull. I wasn't invested in any aspect of it, and apart from some visually interesting shots, it offered absolutely nothing we haven't seen a million times before. The atmosphere felt like a cheap knock off of the one that worked so well in "The Witch", the acting wasn't the greatest, the jump scares were predictable and didn't fit within the film's atmosphere, the dialogue was not engaging in the slightest and the narration used throughout the entire runtime of the movie really got on my nerves at a certain point.
"Gretel & Hansel" was a disappointment that should've honestly worked better. It's quite possibly the most boring film released this year and one that felt 2 hours long, despite having a runtime of only 87 minutes.

FINAL GRADE: 3/10
