Verdict: Supposed to come out last September, "The Hunt" saw its release pushed back due to a controversy regarding its plot, despite the fact that nobody had seen it. That decision was absolutely ridiculous and nonsensical to me, which is proven by the fact that it was released recently in theaters without anyone even batting an eye. The movie was made available yesterday to the public worldwide through streaming services due to the Coronavirus outbreak in order to help people cope with the whole social distancing thing.
The aim of "The Hunt" is twofold. It wants to be both entertaining and thought-provoking at the same time. And while this is not an impossible task to achieve, it often results in a sloppy narrative. And unfortunately for Craig Zobel and Damon Lindelof. mostly known for their work in the television world, this was one of those times.
We've seen many movies of people hunting other people over the years, and this one didn't really offer anything new on an entertainment level. There was a lot of CGI gore that looked terribly fake, none of the deaths scenes were satisfying, and the tension was non-existent. The whole concept made next to no sense and was borderline ridiculous, much like the parody-like characters which had no depth to them whatsoever. I wasn't entirely sure if they were purposely written as exaggerated versions of themselves, but it didn't work regardless as they all felt two-dimensional. The politically charged themes introduced within the narrative, which served as the backbone of the plot, were all developed in an incredibly unsubtle way that made it even more impossible to take seriously.
I'm not entirely sure what the intent of "The Hunt" was, but I can assure you that I wasn't impressed by any aspect of it. It didn't work as a silly and mindless action film, and it didn't succeed in being a thoughtful commentary on serious social issues that are dividing the United States today.
