Verdict: 2014 in my opinion was a banger year for movies. With releases such as "Birdman", "Whiplash", "Interstellar", "The Grand Budapest Hotel", "Nightcrawler" or "Boyhood", it may even be the best of the 2010s. The standard to be called one of the best of that year is very high, but you can always count on David Fincher to smash these standards, because "Gone Girl" is absolutely an instant classic.
I've seen this movie three times already, and enjoyed it each time more than the previous time, which says a lot about the attention to details Fincher focused on. Movies like these usually get old after one watch. "Shutter Island", for instance, didn't age well for me because once you become familiar with the final reveal, you find out on your second watch that it doesn't really offer much else (and that's coming from someone whose favorite director is Martin Scorsese). But Fincher's genius was above that. The twist was revealed only halfway through the movie, and the direction it takes completely shifts beyond that point. "Gone Girl" is basically two movies beautifully merged into one thanks to masterful editing work and a script that utilizes non-linear storytelling in one of the smartest way I've ever seen. It's a movie that despite having a runtime of two and a half hours, will leave you asking for more. I was on the edge of my seat all three times I watched it, and this is not only thanks to the incredibly unnerving and intriguing atmosphere surrounding Amazing Amy's disappearance, or the interesting way in which the role of mainstream media in times like these is presented, but also because it's centered around fascinating, layered, and most of all, incredibly well-acted characters played by Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Carrie Coon and even Tyler Perry.
"Gone Girl", and I don't think I'm exaggerating here, is bound to become a classic admired in the same ways Hitchcock's work is revered now. It's Fincher's last movie to date and quite possibly one of his best. A definite must for those who haven't seen it still.

FINAL GRADE: 9/10
