Verdict: What a damn good surprise "Wild Rose" was! The movie, directed by Tom Harper, follows a young single mother of two's road to becoming a country singer in Nashville, with the only obstacle to her dream being herself and her reckless decisions.
While the film's biggest issues were its predictability in its narrative and lack of originality in its technical aspects, it more than compensates in its performances and original soundtrack. Jessie Buckley in the lead was a revelation and a standout, and I wouldn't be surprised if she was rewarded with a nomination come Oscar season. Julie Walters as her mother and Sophie Okonedo as her employer also deliver great performances. The only actors I couldn't entirely get behind were unfortunately the children, who to their credit weren't really given a lot to work with. Jessie Buckley didn't only act her heart out, but also flawlessly sung the film's phenomenal soundtrack, which I cannot stop listening to. The songs, besides being exceptionally well written, add a lot of heart and charm to the movie, making the experience an extremely pleasant one. And all this is coming from a person who doesn't really consider himself a big fan of country music.
I sincerely hope that this movie doesn't fly under the radar, because it really does deserve your attention. I really do wish that it took more risks from both a storytelling and cinematography perspective, but I was nonetheless extremely surprised by how much I enjoyed every other aspect of it.

FINAL GRADE: 7.5/10
