The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018)
Stars: Chloe Grace Moretz, Steven Hauck, Quinn Shephard
Runtime: 91 minutes
Synopsis: A teenager is admitted into a gay conversion therapy center.
- Performances: 7/10
Why? Pretty good, even though I felt at times that they sacrificed emotion for the sake of realism. This is not necessarily a bad thing, especially considering the fact that Akhavan chose to present the story in a very sincere way, but I can't help but feel that showing a little bit more emotion could've helped better depict the characters' struggles.
- Screenplay: 7/10
Why? Making a film about sensitive subjects such as the one tackled in this production is never easy to do. "The Miseducation of Cameron Post", however, manages to present and depict the social issues at stake in a beautifully raw and realistic way. The message is delivered in a very subtle way, which is rare to witness in movies dealing with heavy themes such as this one. Having said that, I did have some issues with the script, mainly in its last 20 minutes which I didn't find as effectively delivered as the rest of it. There was also some cheese here and there which took me out of the film a couple of times. But overall, I quite enjoyed the direction this movie took and its sincere presentation of an issue that's still very much real today.
- Costumes/Makeup: 6/10
- Editing: 8/10
- Cinematography: 7/10
Why? The sense of realism we get while watching the movie is enhanced by its clean looking cinematography. Even though the film doesn't offer anything new in this department, it still delivers a visually stunning final print that will please anyone who watches it.
- Score/Soundtrack: 7/10
Why? Elegant and depressing. It plays perfectly in the film's background, rarely taking the spotlight.
FINAL GRADE: 7/10
