The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)

Director: Ethan Coen, Joel Coen
Stars: Liam Neeson, James Franco, Zoe Kazan
Runtime: 132 minutes

Synopsis: An anthology film comprised of six different stories all set in the Old West.

  • Performances: 9/10
Why? Despite no one getting more than half an hour of screen time, every single actor managed to shine in a way. Whether it's by nailing the comedic timing or by delivering heartfelt performances, I found myself surprisingly caring about all the characters featured in every single story.
  • Screenplay: 8/10
Why? Anthology films made up of various stories are always a gamble to make since it's near impossible to tell multiple stories where all of them are equally entertaining. There will always be segments superior in quality than others. And that's the case in this latest Coen Brothers western. Now don't get me wrong, all 6 stories are extremely well written with layered characters and comedic moments you just can't find anywhere else nowadays, but if I had to compare them to each other, I'd say that 2 of the stories told weren't as entertaining as the other 4. "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs" remains, however, one the Coen Brothers' best films, and most definitely one of the best modern westerns to hit theaters (or Netflix, in that case).
  • Costumes/Makeup: 9/10
Why? Yes, the costumes beautifully captured the times in which the film is set, but it's the makeup, and more specifically the fake blood used in duels that gave the film its over the top, Tarantino-esque feel which I absolutely adored.
  • Editing: 8/10
Why? I can't say that any of the stories told dragged or felt rushed. They were all approximately 30 minutes long and all featured a beginning, middle, and end that constituted a cohesive story.
  • Cinematography: 9/10
Why? Bruno Delbonnel's second collaboration with the Coen Brothers (after "Inside Llewyn Davis") was as impressive as their first. Everything about the movie's presentation, from the color palette to the locations and set designs used, were absolutely gorgeous. The cinematography was just the cherry on top of an already delicious cake.
  • Score/Soundtrack: 9/10
Why? The score and soundtrack featured played a huge role in setting both the atmosphere and tone of the movie. It had a very western vibe to it all the while being over the top, but never slaps you in the face with it.

FINAL GRADE: 9/10
