Verdict: Now that's what I call a successful directorial debut! I stumbled upon "Calibre" while browsing for a movie to watch on Netflix. I found the plot intriguing and decided to give it a shot that turned out to be more than just a pleasant surprise. Before talking about the technical aspects of the movie, I have to mention the gorgeous setting and scenery used. The action takes place in a small Scottish village that neighbors an absolutely beautiful forest, and the director takes full advantage of it. I was awed at the beauty of the thriller from start to finish, despite it not benefiting from a screenplay as pleasing. My issues with the story are, unfortunately, not minimal and did affect my overall liking of the film. First of all, I found the two main characters (who were still excellently portrayed by Lowden and McCann) lacking the depth and history needed to truly care about their situation. Another thing that bothered me was how much of a rollercoaster the film was. It jumped from incredibly tense scenes to dragging situations constantly, which sort of killed its general atmosphere. "Calibre" is nevertheless a ride I'd suggest everyone to experience, and I can't wait to see what Palmer does next.

Final Grade: 7/10
