Verdict: Set in a world where any little sound immediately attracts deadly creatures, "A Quiet Place" follows a family of four and their struggle to survive in such horrific conditions.
A longtime fan of John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, I was eagerly waiting for this movie to come out as it not only marks the first time the real-life couple star in a movie together, but was also directed by the man who is best known for playing Jim in the American version of "The Office".
There's a lot I liked about this movie, starting with the performances. Krasinski and especially Blunt were truly great in their roles, bringing the emotional range needed for their characters to work. Noah Jupe and Millicent Simmonds, who portrayed the children of the couple, were also pretty good. I thought they were really convincing as children trapped in such a vicious world. However, much like "Get Out" last year, the real star of the project was the director, who similarly to Jordan Peele, comes from a comedic background. The whole movie was beautifully shot and filled with tense scenes, particularly when the characters are trying to move around without making any sound. What tainted the experience for me and made me leave the theater a bit disappointed was, unfortunately, the script written by Bryan Woods, Scott Beck, and John Krasinski. The story relied a lot on conveniences and wasn't completely free of cheese. It was also guilty of many horror cliches like questionable character decisions, cheap jump scares, and a logic that doesn't entirely make sense when you really think about it. Marco Beltrami's score could've played a big part in making the audience feel what the characters were feeling, but ends up being regretfully inefficient as well.
"A Quiet Place", in my opinion, was far from perfect, but is still worth your time, especially if like me you're a fan of the people involved or of horror movies in general. John Krasinski showed us a side I never imagined he had, and I'm already excited to see what he does next.

Final Grade: 6/10
